Bike Week: 6th – 12th June
With Bike Week fast approaching, BrisDoc’s Green Team have put together some useful resources to support you in cycling (or choosing other active travel options) to get to work.
Get Involved!
Make a green pledge and take on the challenge!
We are asking staff to make a pledge and commit to making better choices, both in work and at home, that reduce our impact on the environment.
This month’s focus is Journeys, and we would like to challenge you to take at least one fewer car journey during bike week.

Some of us need to use cars. But finding alternative ways to get around, even just some of the time can help to:
- Active travel helps reduce local air pollution.
- It is great for a healthier mind and body
- Plus you can save ££ on fuel and wear and tear on your vehicle.
- The World Health Organisation explains how air pollution is impacting our health.
- The Royal College of Physicians also produced a great report called Every Breathe we take.
BrisDoc Cycle Schemes
BrisDoc are signed up to two cycle schemes that are open to the majority of permanent staff *subject to certain criteria. These are salary sacrifice schemes under the governments ‘Green Transport Plan Initiative’, which means that you exchange part of your salary for a non-cash benefit – in this case a bicycle or safety equipment. As this is taken from your gross salary (before tax) it means that you pay less income tax and national insurance during that period.
For more information about these schemes and how to sign up please contact workforcesupport@brisdoc.org
Cycle Routes to our bases
There are lots of resources available to support you in route planning and we have listed a few of these below, as far as possible these routes avoid main roads and hills:
- Better by Bike – Cycle routes around bristol | Better by Bike
- Sustrans – Detailed maps & routes to explore across the UK | OS Maps (the yellow routes avoid roads completely)
- Google Maps will plan your route from start to finish to minimise hills and main roads but it will prioritise speed – so if it is significantly quicker or only possible by main road it will choose this option.
